Opening Statement vs Randal Rauser:
Randal, I want to thank you for having this important conversation with Josh and me. It’s an honor to have this conversation with you.
Today we are discussing how Christian Americans ought to vote. To be specific: Josh and I contend that it’s impossible for an informed and consistent Christ follower to vote for Harris and Walz; you disagree.
Although you are a Canadian who cannot VOTE in America’s elections, you do use your VOICE to influence American voters. So, in a sense, you are using your God-given power to advance certain ideas and policies here in America.
Be that as it may, I think you and I both find common ground in loving our neighbors. I believe that this common ground provides a foundation for us to build upon as we discuss the intersection of theology and politics today.
Indeed, loving—and protecting—neighbors is what drives me (and I speak for Josh as well).
Allow me to set up this conversation .
Many Christians realize how evil the Democrat Party has become as it’s rapidly moved to the extreme left. To make matters worse, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are the most radical left ticket to ever run for the United States presidency.
Now, just so there’s no confusion here, I am not a Republican.
I left the Republican Party in 2007 because I opposed George W. Bush’s leadership (not to mention that of Dick Cheney’s). I became a registered free-thinking Independent.
But as an Independent, it’s hard to see how there is any way that an informed and consistent Christ-follower can cast a vote for Harris and Walz, since the policies they advance literally bring death and destruction upon the neighbors Jesus has commanded us to love.
Dr. Robert A.J. Gagnon has recently informed American Christians that a vote for Harris/Walz is a vote for the following. Consider this non-exhaustive list:
*State-sponsored child abuse via chemical castration and surgical mutilation of confused minors.
*An unhindered death cult of abortion for all 9 months (including infanticide for babies who survive botched abortions).
*State abduction of your minor child if parents do not support the confused child’s “LGBTQ” identification to the state’s satisfaction.
*The scandal and harm to females of putting males in female private spaces (bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, shelters, prisons, and sports).
*Massive election cheating through illegal immigration that threatens to result in a one-Party state nationally (after the model of California).
*A radical reduction of free speech and free exercise of religion (including compelled speech) regarding any criticism of “LGBTQ+” immorality and abortion.
*The weaponization of the Justice Department to go after states that do not protect so-called “reproductive freedom” (abortion with zero limits).
*The legalization of school officials lying to parents about their child’s “trans” identification and use of cross-gender hormones.
*Using a parent’s non-support for their child’s “LGBTQ+” identification as a reason to deny to that parent custody in a divorce settlement.
*Persecution of one’s chief political opponent as though the US were a Banana Republic.
*Forced “LGBTQ+” indoctrination with accompanying threat to educational and employment opportunities.
*Jailing of pro-life protestors and whistle blowers at hospitals doing chemical castration and mutilation surgery on minors.
*Loss of federal student loans and ultimately loss of accreditation for Christian schools that do not promote “LGBTQ” immorality.
*Nomination and appointment of court justices who have no problem with legislating far-Left from the bench and overriding constitution protections.
*Higher inflation and national debt through expansion of the social welfare state.
And don’t get me started about Harris and Walz seeking to disarm the population (a typical move of dictators). Each one of these evils is enough to justify being a “single-issue voter,” but combined they provide a cumulative case leading to the conclusion that for an informed Christian to be consistent, he or she cannot vote FOR the evil policies of Harris and Walz. Indeed, these evils are far more destructive to your neighbors than anything that happened on January 6th.
Consider this: God gives authority to the government to suppress evil (Romans 13). Government officials in positions of authority are called to fight evil (1 Peter 2: 13-14). In America, "We The People" are the ones who decide which politicians represent us and work for us. We decide who bears the sword.
Given that the American form of Government, instantiated by America's founders (which according to Romans, God instantiated) puts "We The People" in charge to select who is going to suppress evil and bear the sword, “We The People” have a moral obligation to use our God-given voting powers to DEFEND THE OPPRESSED (as scripture commands) and suppress the evil threatening our neighbors whom we are commanded to love.
It is our moral duty to choose who will bear the sword and suppress evil.
If your vote helps to advance evil—bringing literal death and destruction upon the neighbors you’ve been commanded to love—you are in sin. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Gal 5:14).
Love your neighbor by defending and protecting your neighbor and suppressing evil. Use your God-given power wisely. Whatever you do, do not use your voting powers to advance the objective evil of Harris and Walz upon your neighbors.
Consider an argument:
Christians are commanded to suppress evil, defend the oppressed, and love neighbors.
If one uses their power to advance the evil set of policies of Harris and Walz (which literally brings death and destruction upon our neighbors), one has failed to suppress evil, defend the oppressed, and love neighbors.
Therefore, if a Christian uses their power to advance the extremely evil set of polices of Harris and Walz, the Christian has failed to suppress evil, defend the oppressed, and love neighbors.
Look, this is a violation of the ONE law in which Paul says sums up the entire Law of Christ. This is not some secondary theological issue in which we are free to disagree, this is the top of primary theological matters and essential Christian doctrine.
It goes without saying that voting for Harris and Walz advances their objectively evil set of polices which literally brings death and destruction upon our neighbors we are commanded to love. Thus, if we are going to keep the most essential Law to love our neighbors, then “We The People” cannot vote for Harris and Walz (it would be a sin against God and our neighbors).
American Christians, we each have a VOTE and a VOICE. Remaining silent in the face of evil is opposed to God’s word. We must vocally oppose evil, and definitely not vote for it.
Consider the biblical data:
Romans 12:21 tells us clearly:
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
We must speak out against evil in order to act against it (which includes voting against it).
Leviticus 5:1 is clear that staying silent about evil is a sin for which people will be held accountable:
“If anyone sins because they do not speak up . . . regarding something they have seen or learned about (when they become informed), they will be held responsible.”
This echoes the words attributed to Bonhoeffer:
“To be silent in the face of evil is evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act,”
If you are an informed Christian—and aware of the great objective evils advanced by Harris and Walz—not only will you not use your VOTE to help advance this great evil upon your neighbors, you will use your VOICE to warn the sheep, warn your neighbors, and protect the least of these.
James 4:17 is clear:
“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”
If we know that God is calling us to speak out against evil but we choose to be silent, we are sinning. Thus, American Christians—“We The People” must use our voices to oppose Harris and Walz.
If that’s the case we definitely can’t VOTE for them.
We are called to vocally oppose evil. In Isaiah 58:1, God commands us to be loud and aggressive when speaking out against evil:
“Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the descendants of Jacob their sins.”
The Book of Esther tells the story of Queen Esther, who seeks God’s guidance for how to speak out against the evil plans of the government to annihilate her people. Mordecai encourages her to speak up with these words:
“For if you remain silent at this time . . . you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14).
American Christians: YOU have been given a “royal position” as it were. Don’t take it for granted that YOU are “We The People.” You have been blessed with God-given power. Do not squander it, but use it to protect the neighbors God has commanded you to love. Do not use your “royal position” to vote for evil, instead use your voice to oppose it.
Ephesians 5:11 commands us to:
“Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.”
Have nothing to do with the darkness advanced by Harris and Walz—don’t vote for them, but rather, EXPOSE them! Use your voice.
Proverbs 31:9 tells us to:
“Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”
Isaiah 1:17 commands us to:
“Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed.”
Defend the oppressed! Defend the babies being slaughtered by the modern-day holocaust. Defend the indoctrinated and confused children who are being sexually and physically mutilated. Defend women from biological males seeking to invade their spaces. Defend your neighbors from the Marxist ideas that have killed more humans than any other evil on the face of the planet.
Nothing that happened on January 6thtrumps all of these grave evils that literally destroy the neighbors you’ve been commanded to love. As Jesus said in Matthew 23, do not ignore “the greater matters of the Law” (lest He refer to you as a “hypocrite” and a “blind guide”).
Don’t use your power to cast a vote that advances more evil upon the oppressed. Instead, use your VOICE to defend the oppressed.
In conclusion:
With these arguments in mind, along with a host of objective evils advanced by the modern-day Democrat machine led by Harris and Walz, Josh and I contend that it is impossible for an informed and consistent Christ follower to vote for Harris and Walz.
I encourage you to watch the informal debate that followed my opening speech (here) and then watch the "fact check" episode that Josh Klein and I recorded (here). Stay reasonable (Isaiah 1:18),
